To build comprehensive foundation models of cellular behavior, learning from diverse single-cell data modalities is essential. We explore current multimodal foundation modeling methods and emphasize compositional AI through combining unimodal pretrained models as a first principle modular design approach. The unified representations learned by these models pave the way for agentic virtual cell models.
